DESCRIPTION:The RazorHack Cyber Challenge is a 3-day capture the flag competition\, where hacking enthusiasts and hobbyists from all walks of life gather to showcase their skills and compete for prizes. Contestants will have to take on the role of consultants and help the RazorPower energy company recover from a nuclear power plant catastrophe. Matthew Gardner\, Ph.D.\, P.E.\nVice President\, Electric Transmission Planning and Operations\, Dominion Energy Virginia \nAbstract \nOur nation’s energy landscape is in the midst of change – some call it a disruption – one that we haven’t seen since the end of WWII. Our thirst for data and the desire to electrify everything translates directly into a surge in electrical energy demand. Serving the world’s largest data center market\, the Commonwealth is ground zero for growth. In his talk\, Matthew will unpack the energy growth drivers and how the electric grid is transforming to produce\, transport\, and deliver electricity to customers in a way that is reliable\, affordable\, and increasingly clean – even amidst unprecedented demands. The talk will provide an overview of the changes coming\, the digital transformation that is inevitable\, and how these converging forces will result in a grid with not only more capacity\, but also with more capability. \nSpeaker’s Bio \n \nGardner is responsible for over 6\,700 miles of electric transmission lines and more than 800 substation assets at Dominion Energy Virginia\, serving 2.7 million customers. Since joining in 2008\, he has held various roles in planning\, operations\, maintenance\, and engineering. \nHe serves on the board of the North American Transmission Forum and the executive advisory council of IEEE and its Power and Energy Society. He is President\, CIGRE U.S. National Committee and is an active supporter of several academic institutions within the Commonwealth\, including George Mason University (College of Engineering Industry Advisory Board)\, Virginia Commonwealth University (Executive Engineer in Residence)\, and Virginia Tech. \nHe holds a Ph.D.\, M.S.\, and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech\, where he was a Bradley Fellow.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Considerations for Building Trust in AI to Support Tactical Decisions of Firefighters
DESCRIPTION:Speaker \nDr. Ryan Falkenstein-Smith\nNational Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)\, Gaithersburg\, Maryland \nAbstract \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more common in many areas of public safety\, and the fire service may have opportunities to use AI as a tool to improve firefighter safety and decision‐making. However\, not all AI technologies are built with firefighters’ needs in mind\, and some may pose risks if not designed or used correctly. Without clear guidelines\, individual fire departments may be left to navigate AI on their own\, leading to inconsistent practices and potential safety concerns for firefighters. This seminar discusses pathways to develop clear guidelines and standards that ensure AI tools meet firefighter needs\, function reliably in real-world conditions\, and keep human decision-making at the center of fire response. Existing NIST projects focused on forecasting hazardous fire events\, such as backdraft and flashover\, are presented as case examples that\, when applied to the NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework\, demonstrate how effective AI tools can become more accepted by those who serve their communities \nSpeaker’s Bio \nDr. Ryan Falkenstein-Smith is a Mechanical Engineer in the Firefighting Technology Group of the Fire Research Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University in 2017. As the leader of the Smart Fire Fighting Project\, Dr. Falkenstein-Smith’s research centers on developing measurement science and technology to improve situational awareness\, operational effectiveness\, and firefighter safety. This work includes developing innovative sensors and data-processing technologies\, such as gas-extraction devices for predicting backdrafts and non-invasive analytical tools. His efforts also focus on improving chemical analysis capabilities within the Fire Research Division to identify and quantify various compounds in smoke.
